    1. I have absorbed a lot of information concerning psychedelic substances during the past few years. Some sources have taken a scientific approach, full of statistics, surveys, and other assorted data. Others have focused on the spiritual use of these substances, which include direction for practices like meditation, yoga, and breath work. There are also accounts of recreational use, which clearly illustrate the possibilities of both positive and negative outcomes of using and abusing these substan [...]

    2. Recommended by Kevin Kelly whose work I admire as inventor, writer and founder of Wired magazine. This book is a good compilation of tips, recommendations, research, studies, personal accounts and history of psychedelics. Although a bit repetitive at times it holds a great deal of serious information about these substances and the responsibility of using them as therapeutic and spiritual tools. The checklist and tips for the voyager and the guide are really useful. If you are afraid they will g [...]

    3. I’ve long been fascinated by various conscious altering substances, whether it be the common ones like alcohol or pot, or others like LSD, ayahuasca, or mescaline . This led me to study more about the war on drugs, the legality of drugs, and the history of drugs. The more I looked, the more blown away I became when I realized none of it made sense - we were creating a problem rather than solving one (see drugwarkills). While studying more about psychedelics specifically, I came across this boo [...]

    4. Psychedelics as a subject matter remains largely a taboo and is seen in a very demeaning manner since the 60s. The world at large lives with an outdated sense of these medicines.James Fadiman's book comes as a solid reference point and proof about these chemicals. It includes hardened research, insights and implications of the therapeutic value of psychedelics. Be it treating war veterans for PTSD or treating end-of-life anxiety in Cancer patients the book explores the new wave of psychedelic re [...]

    5. This book makes me angry. Angry to how unreasonable the war on psychedelics is and to how better this world would be.

    6. This is a really useful and informative book. Even given my own very limited experience with psychedelics it has certainly been my experience that they were very useful to me in dealing with some very perplexing psychological difficulties that plagued me all my life as a result of an abusive childhood. In that instance it was as though I was provided with "sight" which I had never had before, all became clear and a pathway cleared for some progress where once I had been stuck. The rub of course, [...]

    7. Dr. Fadiman was one of the last legal researchers in the early era of psychedelic research, to have access to the chemical as well as an approved environment for testing. He covers a fair bit of that, as well as familiarity with Ram Dass, Leary, Kesey et. al. And experiments with architects and engineers about problem solving with the chemical. The most interesting developments of late include a trend of what is known as "micro-dosing"- individuals who take minute amounts of the chemical and go [...]

    8. A lot of direct instructions on how to be guided, and how to guide, an entheogenic session. Plus excellent descriptions of altered states of consciousness. All couched in the author's career studying psychotropics in an academic setting (or not). Regulations are loosening and a lot of (legal) academic and scientific research has been going on recenlty, with some amazing and positive findings for the possibilities for creativity and positive change with careful psychedelic use.

    9. This book is chalk full of interesting information about psychedelics. Many of the sections and chapters gave me interesting insights, and it was a book where I took many detours to "Google" what he was saying. I wouldn't consider this a "smooth read", as there isn't really a narrative to it. However, it is a good "reference book". From everything I've seen though, it seems quite stunning that psychedelics are illegal. I am thinking about the Shaman in South America, who was an expert guide, and [...]

    10. Quite lengthy but covers quite a bit. Very informative in numerous areas. Some sections seem a little technical but still understood. A vast ocean of knowledge in both Psychadelic experiences, therapeutic usage and more.

    11. Love psychedelics, but honestly not a very good book. Collects information that you could more easily find online. Advice is flaky at best and outright nonsensical at worse. It is a lot of anecdotes and not a lot of good instruction, honestly. Was hoping for a lot more. Could have been 100 pages or less of a really good book and instead it is a rambling poorly organized collection of blog posts and snippets of stories already published elsewhere. If you know nothing about psychedelics or their hi [...]

    12. The book had a lot of good information, and at time it was nice to read, I'm happy that I did read it, but some times it was so dry that it felt like a chore to get through it, certainly more on the academic side more than pop sci.

    13. I really enjoyed this book and I think it is a beneficial read to anyone who is interested in the therapeutic and spiritual aspects of psychedelic substances or who thinks they may ever have to talk someone through a tough emotional situation as a result of using some of these substances. My one complaint about the book was that the title was a bit misleading, and it seemed as if the whole book would be dedicated to instructing people on how to be safe and how to help others be safe, but there w [...]

    14. As a psychedelic enthusiast (which clearly I am), this book is a must read. Most of it contains information about the different ways one can use psychedelics and the clinical studies and research that has been done so far . This was my main reason for reading this. Also, very useful, it has a few chapters which contain guides, information and advice on how to have a safe experience and how to guide one for someone else, if you choose to do so. Must read before you go on a trip, if you haven't re [...]

    15. The pendulum is swinging back. It's still not safe to have this conversation—it never will be while the fear-and-ignorance party(*) is in power—but if not now, when? Let's keep the momentum going. Let's build a better future. This is an important book on many levels. It's not cohesive: it meanders among the importance of a guide for high-dose sessions (and excellent advice therefor), accounts of academic research in the 60s, justified ranting against the research ban, promising summaries of t [...]

    16. A very straightforward book about what is what in a practical way. Since I have firsthand experience with psychedelics it was a fairly easy read and in some areas I could relate more than I had presumed possible; in fact I had totally forgotten about some important aspects before reading this book and it was a bliss to refresh my memory.All-in-all this book requires an open mind when reading it with a goal to ditch all the false beliefs instilled in us during our earlier parts in life. Just beca [...]

    17. It was an interesting book, but I was hoping for much more new information. The vast majority of this book is about the studies done in the early 1960s (about which I think most people interested in entheogens have already read). There was a tiny sliver of newer information, but not enough to build a book around. The newer stuff included, oddly enough, some trip reports the likes of which can be found all over the internet. The cover led me to believe I was getting something other than what I go [...]

    18. Wow, if anybody is looking into psychedelics of any kind then it would be wise to read this book. Written by a pioneer of LSD research in the 60's, the book is filled with research and personal anecdotes of those who have taken LSD very successfully. It also delves into ayahuasca ceremonies briefly. It's important for people to be educated about proper use and the various ways in which one's life can be changed for the better. This is one of the best books out there for this purpose. The book ca [...]

    19. A little all over the place. Very dry in parts, remarkably fascinating in others. This book covers the importance of set and setting in a psychedelic experience, among other things, then once past the advice-giving section of the book goes into odds and ends. Of particular note are the first trip experiences of many famous members of the "movement".Great reading if you ever intend to trip your face off, and want to go in informed. Just don't feel like you need to go cover-to-cover on this one, s [...]

    20. This was an informative (if occasionally dry) series of research reports and essays by Fadiman and other researchers into the therapeutic use of psychedelics. I'll certainly keep this as a practical tool (particularly for the checklists on being a guide), though in my case, this book was already preaching to the choir. It would be a better fit for those in the medical profession, or those newly curious about psychedelics, who need some good straight facts about the safe usage of psychedlics and [...]

    21. Overall i would not recommend it as a source of up to date concise information on the safe use of psychedelics, their utility, phenomena and consequences. From a reading perspective it resembled an unstructured compilation (dump) of old material from various contributing authors, cemented together with words rather than distilled authoritative insight. I got half way through and stopped reading, which is rare for me.

    22. For those who are on the fence about trying LSD this book presents very informative, albeit, anecdotal instructions that may sway you in either direction (Both of which are perfectly fine). The objective studies that are represented in the book are very interesting reads for those who are more scientifically orientated but if you are choosing to read this book as a recreational/"party" user it may not be as exciting.

    23. Interesting look at the history of using psychedelics as a research tool, as a creativity booster, and a way of investigating divine influences. Which sounds crazy and mystical to me (since I've never tried them), but makes me hopeful that maybe future research can uncover if these chemicals can be used safely and sanely. Because people are sure not going to stop using them anyhow.

    24. Highly informative on setting up the right conditions to optimise an entheogenic experience and minimise unwanted side effects. Provided a great insight into the history of psychedelics from a research and legal perspective.

    25. This book has a lot of good information. Not everybody who picks up this book will want all of it however. The first four chapters seem directed at beginning users of psychedelics and the rest is just hard data from studies.

    26. The author talks only about cons for use psychedelic and put in evidence some amateur story, not good scientific research. So, when I reached so-called self-guide for useful take psychedelic experience I'm not found anything more than weak pieces of advice for unsure people.
