    1. Colin McEnroe's book does an unusually great job of capturing the "sandwich years" of middle age, when most people are concurrently watching their parents die and their children grow up. He does this with an unexpected mix of profound insight and perfectly crafted humor. It's a refreshing perspective on a period of time when most of us busily attempt to cruise along on automatic pilot, filled with resentment at the intensity of it all.

    2. There were some humorous moments in this book and it was an easy and quick read but I can't say I loved it. Sometimes disjointed, and the pie powder references did not work for me. But it did effectively show the relationship between a father and son (often a complex and difficult thing), and the son's coming to grips with that after his father's death.

    3. so moving, so true, so irish. one of the most tender and intimate portraits of a family i've ever read.
